Research Emphasis

Notable Research Accomplishments

  • Dr. Counce lead team research effort to find how early rice land could be drained for harvest without reducing rough rice yield or milling quality. Dr. Garry McCauley of Texas A & M found similar results in Texas.  Based on our findings from the research, that effort lead to earlier draining date recommendations for rice in Arkansas and Mississippi.  This, in turn, lead to significant savings for many growers due to lower irrigation and tillage costs.
  • Dr. Counce lead research to develop an adaptive, objective growth staging system for rice.

Research Area

  • Agronomic research to increase our understanding of physiological yield-limiting factors of the rice plant and crop.
  • Developing knowledge of plant physiological processes to be used to increase rice yields. In particular, I want to develop physiologically based selection criteria for increasing plant breeding efficiency. Also, I hope to find ways to manage the crop more effectively based on sound understanding of the crop's physiology.

I have recently developed a Rice Growth Staging System for improved communication between rice researchers. This work will provide meaningful and more consistent identification of rice growth stages when treatments, plant response and environmental conditions are observed and measured.
