Research Emphasis

  • Investigation of the nitrogen balance (i.e., nitrogen utilization, nitrogen transformations, nitrogen losses and mechanisms, and nitrogen mineralization from soil and plant residues) in paddy and upland soils.
  • Assessment of new nitrogen fertilizers, urease inhibitors, and nitrification inhibitors.
  • Delineation of the nitrogen partitioning in plants and nitrogen loss from plants.
  • Development of analytical procedures for the determination of nitrogen compounds in plants and soil.
  • Development of soil based nitrogen tests to measure mineralizable soil nitrogen and allow for more precise nitrogen fertilizer recommendations on a site specific basis.
  • Reclaiming problem precision-graded soils with poultry manure and other types of amendments.
  • Use of radioactive and stable isotopes as tracers in soil and plant studies.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from soils cropped to rice.
  • Heavy metal accumulation by rice. 

Courses Taught

  • CSES 3332 -- Rice Production: A study of the principles and practices involved in rice culture world wide with major emphasis on the United States. Recitation 2 hours per week. Prerequisite: CSES 1203.
  • CSES 5033 – Advanced Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition:  A discussion oriented course for graduate students and undergraduate students (with permission) on the importance of plant nutrition in crop physiology and metabolism and the importance of chemical, biological and physical processes in soil that influence nutrient availability. Recitation 3 hours per week. Prerequisite: CSES 4224 or consent.
  • CSES 5214 -- Analytical Research Techniques in Agronomy: Preparation and analysis of plant and soil samples utilizing spectrophotometry, isotopes, and chromatographic separation methods. Additionally, measurements are made of photosyntheses, respiration, water relationships, light, and temperatures in whole plants. Lecture 2 hours, lab 4 hours per week. Prerequisite: BOTY 4304, CHEM 2613, or consent. Co-requisite: CSES 5210L.
