Dr. Bourland was born and raised on a cotton and soybean farm in northeast Arkansas.  He began working in the area of cotton breeding as a graduate student in 1970, and has been involved with cotton breeding since then.  He has developed several cotton measurements that are being used to describe variation in cotton lines.  Over the years, he has developed, described and released nearly 100 cotton lines and cultivars.  He has also been directly involved with cotton variety testing since 1978. 

He and his wife married 1969, and have one son (and daughter-in-law) and two grandchildren.  He is an active member of the Keiser First Baptist Church and the Mississippi County Farm Bureau.

  • Cotton breeding:
    • Graduate training in cotton breeding at the University of Arkansas and Texas A&M University. 
    • Responsible for cotton breeding programs at Mississippi State University (1978-1988) and the University of Arkansas (1988-present).  Focus of these cotton breeding programs has been to develop cotton genotypes having improved host plant resistance that are highly adapted to the Mid-south cotton production region.  Have released 82 germplasm lines and 4 cultivars. 
  • Other primary research areas:
    • Responsible for cotton variety testing in Arkansas, 1988-present. 
    • Worked on cotton seed and seedlings has helped to define vigor parameters of each, determined their inheritance, and identified ways to genetically improve them.
    • Developed modified whole-plant cotton plant mapping program (COTMAP)
    • Established active screens for resistance to seed deterioration, seedling disease, root knot nematode, Verticillium wilt, and tarnished plant bug to improve host plant resistance.
    • Co-leader of research effort to develop an expert cotton management system (COTMAN) that is centered on monitoring the plant throughout the season and reacting to its growth pattern.
    • Investigating and utilizing new yield component approaches to stabilize and improve yield.
    • Developed techniques for rating leaf and stem pubescence and measuring marginal bract trichomes to improve clean-ability of cotton lint.
    • Developed on-line program (COTVAR) for summarizing variety test data from multiple states.
    • Established new approach for improving cotton via basic yield components.
