To conduct research on methodologies that increase the efficiency and effectiveness of a soybean breeding program, such as genomic selection, prediction models utilizing pedigree and historical performance information, remote-sensing phenotyping, and reassessment and redeployment of classical breeding tools.

To investigate mitigations and solutions for revenue-limiting stresses either biotic or abiotic, like flood and drought stresses, and fungal and viral plant pathogens. And to research opportunities to increase soybean farming revenue by generation of niche products, such as modified seed quality traits, natto, edamame, tofu, organic non-GMO crops, among others.

To train undergraduate and graduate students on the art and science of plant breeding, with emphasis on classical and advanced breeding methodologies. The intention is to generate personal experiences that can be used to learn from the past to better mold the future of agriculture.

  • Associate Professor – Soybean Breeding, University of Arkansas, September 2017 to present. Tenure-track position with 90% research and 10% teaching responsibilities. In charge of developing soybean germplasm and cultivars adapted to Arkansas and the US Mid-south, conduct research on soybean breeding and production, train graduate students in the art and science of plant breeding, and instruct plant breeding and soybean production courses.
  • Soybean Breeder, Monsanto Company, May 2009 to present. Responsible to build and establish a new soybean breeding program in Waco, NE, U.S.A., including the selection of germplasm stock and the establishment of a testing network to support the development of soybean varieties MG2 and MG3 adapted to the US Midwest. Outcomes from these breeding efforts include the release and patent of twelve soybean varieties up-to-date that have been commercialized in various brands and market outlets of the company. Duties and responsibilities of my role have also included hiring, developing, and managing personnel (up to four full-time employees at one time), managing budget and field operations, and being the site-responsible-researcher for the testing of regulated materials. As training and support for this managerial aspect of my role I completed the “People Leader Learning Series”, a series of 12 classroom sessions for people leaders in the company, and I participated in the “Local Leadership Experience”, a year-long training for people managers where we learned about the business and its leaders, and their leadership and communication strategies. After a series of internal reorganizations the people management and the operational and budgeting duties have been delegated to the local Site and Operations Leads, and my role has been reconverted to a Line Development Breeder. This new role involves population development and advancement, and line development and testing during their initial stages; handing finished lines to commercial breeders for pre-commercial product placement and deployment. The population development and management responsibilities involve population prioritization via Best Linear Unbiased Predictions (BLUP) and application of Marker Assisted Selection and Genome Wide Selection for various traits of interest. As part of my role at Monsanto I have also been responsible to build strong relationships with the agronomy, sales, and technology development organizations in order to support variety characterization, placement, and marketing needs by means of field days and classroom presentations to sales representatives, agronomists, and customer farmers. In this role I have also participated in internal research efforts, including (1) the implementation of BLUP for population development and management, (2) the use of remote sensing technologies for prediction of soybean iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC), and (3) research on soybean densities and planting dates, among others. For the implementation of (1) BLUP, I worked with the statistical geneticist to define the dataset to be used and reviewed the applicability of the results from the various working models. I also provided outreach and training to other fellow breeders on the use and application of BLUPs in their breeding programs. There was a software building component of this research, for which I provided the developers screen-mockups that included the user interface needs and flow-charts with the program logic. For the research on (2) remote-sensing IDC, I provided plot ratings for building the model, as well as feedback to the scientist regarding the performance of the various models. And lastly, the studies (3) on soybean planting dates were performed by a research intern I directed for six months during 2014, where we characterized varietal responses to planting dates, identifying the yield components most affected.
  • Graduate Research Assistant/Senior Graduate Research Assistant, Soybean Breeding Program, University of Arkansas, May 2003 to May 2009. Responsible for the design and execution of soybean experiments for the University of Arkansas Soybean Breeding Program. Co-managed all breeding operations for the program. Experiences gained also included DNA extraction and molecular marker analysis, food science laboratory analyses (HPLC, spectroscopy, wet chemistry), sensory analysis and postharvest processing of vegetable soybean, maintenance and characterization of fungal colonies (plating, microscopy, feeding substrate characterizations), and plant virus research (plant inoculations, ELISA, tissue blotting, differential classifications).
