Dr. Sharpley is an international authority on assessing, managing, and remediating the impacts of agricultural management on soil and water resources. His research investigates the cycling of phosphorus in soil-plant-water systems in relation to soil productivity and water quality and includes the management of animal manures, fertilizers, and crop residues. He also evaluates the role of stream and river sediments in modifying phosphorus transport and response of receiving lakes and reservoirs.
Dr. Sharpley was the 2017 President of the Soil Science Society of America and the 2018 Chair of Alliance of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science Societies.
Dr. Sharpley has authored or coauthored over 630 publications with the impact of this published research is evidenced by his refereed journal papers being cited 43,554 times since 1995 and 15,887 times since 2012, according to an ISI Web of Knowledge science citation index search. He has an h index of 104 (a scholar with an index of h has published h papers each of which has been cited in other papers at least h times). He was an Associate Editor for the Journal of Environmental Quality from 1984 to 1990 and 1992 to 2000; Technical Editor from 2003 to 2009; and Environmental Perspectives and Issues Editor from 2009 to 2012. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Soil Science Society of America from 2012 to 2016.
Dr. Sharpley investigates real-world conservation issues and strategically applies his findings to increase national and international awareness of the effects of agriculture on water quality and to develop cost-efficient remedial measures that protect water quality. He is continually sought by action agencies, producers, advisory groups, and other scientists and experts to provide up-to-date assessment of environmental issues and practical solutions. He provides technical advice to members of the U.S. Senate and Congress, Farm Bureau, Chesapeake Bay Program, European Union, and United Nations. Dr. Sharpley serves on National Academy of Science and EPA Scientific Advisory Boards and organizes regional, national, and international conferences, and been Keynote speaker at numerous national and international conferences.
Dr. Sharpley formulated equations that predict the transport of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen in runoff, which are used in current major water quality models. His documentation and quantification of the relationship between runoff and soil P was the technical foundation of environmental management strategies, which were adopted by NRCS and EPA as part of major policy changes regarding land-application of manures.
At the request of agencies charged with nutrient management standards and water quality policy, Dr. Sharpley led a multidisciplinary team development and refinement of P Indices to identify agricultural fields at greatest risk for nutrient loss. The success of the P Index is demonstrated by the fact that in 47 states, NRCS have adopted it as the basis for their Comprehensive Nutrient Management Planning strategy to target conservation. Such targeted strategies cost the livestock industry $355 million rather than $980 million per year, according to EPA and led to a reduction of 28,000 tons of P released from livestock operations to the environment in the U.S. alone.
