CSES Mission

The mission of the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences is to provide superior education programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, conduct innovative research and extension programs in the crop soil and environmental sciences and provide superior service for citizens of Arkansas and the nation.

CSES Department History


The Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Arkansas has a long and honored tradition of excellence in teaching, research and service. The Department has produced a large number of successful graduates currently employed in the public and private sectors. We strive to have our best teachers in the introductory classes and to have faculty who are actively pursuing research in their respective disciplines teaching the classes related to their specialty. We have a national reputation of developing outstanding written and oral communication skills in our students.

Within the Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences Department students can major or minor in two degree programs, Crop Science and Environmental, Soil, and Water Science. These two undergraduate programs are significantly increasing the number of undergraduate and graduate opportunities that allow our graduates to be highly competitive in the job market. Other minors are Crop Biotechnology, Pest Management and Wildlife Habitat.


Our research program has consistently produced excellent, innovative, basic and applied technology in such diverse areas as plant breeding and genetics, weed science, crop physiology, soils, and environmental science. Although our faculty work primarily with agricultural interests in providing food and fiber, we also work on problems affecting communities and environmental concerns. Results from these endeavors have been instrumental in allowing the Arkansas farmer to remain competitive in the United States and abroad while preserving the environment.


Transferring technology is a large part of our service function. Services provided by our faculty and staff range from contributing at the national and international levels to answering local questions relative to the discipline. Attention is especially dedicated to serving crop producers, agribusiness, and environmental concerns throughout Arkansas. We encourage our faculty to put their expertise to practical use and to assume leadership and service roles at all levels.


The Department's faculty consists of 32 faculty members, 18 located on the Fayetteville campus and 14 at other locations throughout the state.
