Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences graduated eight students from the University of Arkansas Honors Program May 12. The students received Honors Medallions during a reception in their honor May 11.

Each honors student completed a thesis based on research conducted under the supervision of a faculty mentor.

Joan Michelle Bauer, an animal science major from Saint Louis, worked with Dr. Elizabeth Kegley on a project titled "Impact of Different Handling Styles (Good vs, Aversive) on Growth, Performance, Behavior and Stress Hormone Concentrations in Growing Beef Cattle." She is the daughter of Michael and Joan Hoppe-Bauer.

Kristen Nicole Karnes, an environmental, soil and water science major from Lawrenceville, Ga., worked with Dr. Duane Wolf and Dr. Sonja Housman on a project titled "Paleoclimatic Variations of the Lac du Sommet for the Past 1,000 Years Inferred from Diatom Analysis. She is the daughter of Michael and Terry Karnes.

Olivia Elyse Merritt, an apparel studies major from Farmers Branch, Texas, worked with Dr. Kathleen Smith on a project titled "Female College Students' Perception of Self-Image Based on Fashion Magazine Advertising." She is the daughter of David Merritt and Reina Holmsley.

Jennifer Marie Newcome of Hollister, Mo., a food, human nutrition and hospitality major concentrating in dietetics, worked with Dr. Cyntha Moore on a project titled "The Nutrition Knowledge of Pre-Medical Students at the University of Arkansas." She is the daughter of Wayne and Valerie Newcome.

Camille Annie Schaffner, a food science major from Dallas worked with Dr. Andy Proctor on the project, "The Effect of Various Natural Polyphenolic Antioxidants on CLA Yield during Photoisomerization of Soy Oil Lineolic Acid. She is the daughter of Richard and Amy Schaffner.

Britta Leigh Thielmann of Atlanta, a food, human nutrition and hospitality major concentrating in hospitality and restaurant management, worked with Dr. Godwin-Charles Ogbeide on a project titled "Assessment of Knowledge and Eating Behaviors on Weight and Obesity of College Students. She is the daughter of Justine Albree and R.C. Thielmann.

Taylor Blair Thurow, a food science major from Morrow, Ark., worked with Dr. Sun-Ok Lee on the project, "The Effects of Chlorogenic Acid and Neochlorogenic Acid in Human Colon Cancer Cells. She is the daughter of Tracy and Shawn Thurow.

Madalyn Michelle Watkins, an environmental, soil and water science major from Van Buren, Ark., worked with Dr. Lanier Nalley on a project titled "Crofting and Tenant Farming: An Evolution of Rural Farming in Scotland and Southern Arkansas." She is the daughter of Tom and Jane Watkins.

Donald C. Lee of Anaheim, Calif., the 2012 Outstanding Young Alumnus, spoke about his career as manager of sourcing and procurement for The Walt Disney Co. Michael Norton of Prairie Grove delivered congratulations on behalf of the student body. Norton, Class of 2013 is an honors student majoring in poultry science and agricultural business and is the College's first Truman scholar.
